Applause for the New York Times magazine. They actually decided to put plus-size actress Gabourey Sidibe from the critically acclaimed movie Precious on the cover of their magazine. I know that there will be tons of jokes and laughs about her size, but, I think there will be happiness and encouragement from people who feel like a mold is being broken with Gabourey being photographed on the cover.
Gabourey looks nice on the cover, I just wish they would have gotten a full face shot so you could see her beautiful piercing almond shaped eyes. People need to get passed the weight and recognize the beauty. I hope she is ready for all the criticism she is going to receive because of her weight. From photos and interviews of her, it seems like she is a strong girl and can handle anything that comes her way. Most of all she needs to enjoy this time in her life and embrace the success.
Inside the magazine are pictures of Monique, Mariah Carey, and Director of Precious, Lee Daniels. I for one can't wait to see this movie. If you read the book, then you know what will be in store for you at the theater. I am bringing a box of tissues and some cucumbers to put on my eyes to reduce the swelling from all the tears.
The movie is garnering Oscar buzz for Monique as well as Gabourey. The trailer alone brings tears to my eyes due to the nature of the story which deals with self acceptance, physical and sexual abuse from both parents, and HIV. In some ways many women and young girls will be able to relate to Precious whether they are white or black. I know one issue that I related to, was the complexion issue. I can remember as a young girl the outrageous comments that would be made about my dark skin. Of course it's all about chocolate now, but, back in the day it wasn't. I hope that you guys will go out and support this film and the cast.
Do you think America is ready for a movie like Precious? Do you think it will do well at the Box Office?
And do you think we will be seeing more of Gabourey or will this be it?
