Even with all this snow, spring will be here before you know it. Why not get a jump start on spring shopping by getting one of these floral tops to show how girly curves can be.

The other day I came across an article in the New York Metro newspaper with a picture of plus size model Crystal Renn from the V magazine size issue, and it was titled, "But...Will it last!" The article explored the rise of the plus size model in 2009. It gave a vague timeline of the ups and downs of plus-size models from 2005- 2009, recapping some of the most historical plus size model moments, such as knit wear designer Mark Fast choosing three plus size models to walk in his spring show to Karl Lagerfeld's crazy rant about plus size women being "Fat mummies."

The writer Kenya Hunt (Metro World News In London) interviewed industry insider Gary Dakin (Crystal Renn's agent)

Excerpt from the article:
Since September, Gary Dakin, head of Ford Models Ford + Division, has also received more requests than usual for his models. Gary says: "We have seen spikes in interest. But this year has by far been the biggest one," he says.

According to the article: Dakin thinks that the term plus size is a huge part of the problem that prevented women like Renn and Atwell from booking jobs. He goes on to say, "We have got to get rid of this label.  Women who are size 16 don't necessarily view themselves in the same category as women who are a size 28. If we eliminate the label, problem solved."

A 2001 people magazine article of the top plus models

My thoughts:
As we all know, at this moment it is cool to be curvy or have a little meat on your bones. I think the fashion industry is finally recognizing what the everyday woman wants to see. I believe the plus size phenom will last. This is not anything new. Plus size women have been fighting for years to be accepted into fashion. Models like Emme have been out there advocating for more plus size models and plus size fashion for years. It just seems like now we are being recognized by main stream media.Yes, there are still those fashion designers and editors out there who think that plus size means being unhealthy and they will never become supporters of the movement, but,  I think that the rise of the plus size is here to stay.

As plus size women we should be putting our money where our mouths are. If we want more designers to make plus size clothes then we have to support the designers and chain stores that do offer plus sizes. This will create a need for more plus size models. If we don't support, then we will not continue to see a change.

What are your thoughts on the following points that Gary Dakin makes?

1) A plus size 16 does not neccessarily put themselves in the same category as a size 28.

2) We need to eliminate the plus size label.

My question to you:

Do you think the plus size phenom is here to stay?
I don't know about you, but, I am sick of all this snow. It's making me feel a little dreary. The snow boots, the big coat, the hats, I am sick of it all. To try and get me out of my funky mood, I decided to wear a splash of color today to take my mind off all this gloomy weather.

Hey Curvy Girls,
About a week ago I told you about my unexpected finds at H&M. Today, I wanted to share with you another item that I purchased on that day. Like Mrs. Obama I love cardigans, I will throw one on with anything. When I came across this ruffled (you know I love ruffles) shoulder cardigan at H&M, I immediately fell in love with it. So many curvy girls are afraid of stripes, but, I am not one of them. Yes, sometimes stripes can make you look bigger, but, sometimes you don't always dress to look slim, you just want to look cute.

I decided to pair the cardigan with a pair of ruched leg skinny jeans and (dare I say it) the Lela Rose Payless shoes I wrote about yesterday. There is so much you can do with stripes, but, today, I was feeling them with jeans and matching shoes. Simple but cute. I chose the orange necklace because I like to add a bright color to whatever I'm wearing. By the way, the shoes are not comfortable.

My Tips: When it comes to wearing stripes to flatter your shape, I think it's all about the width and color of the stripes. Thicker widths that hit right across the widest part of your stomach will probably make you look bigger in that area, but, in most cases, I find that smaller width stripes on an open neck can actually be flattering on a plus size curvy girl. You just have to kiss a couple of frogs before you find the right one.

Although I am still fairly young, I remember when I was growing up that is was never cool to wear Payless anything, especially sneakers (think XJ900). If your parents brought home a Payless bag you would look at them like they just sent you out to be hung. You knew that you would be subject to ridicule and atleast a weeks worth of jokes in the cafeteria. As you got older you began to understand why your parents bought you Payless shoes (affordable prices).

Well, times have changed. Since celebrities starting snagging Payless ad campaigns (remember Star Jones Starlet collection), many shoppers started to think twice about buying Payless. Now that designers are designing shoes based off their own collections or just creating designs specifically for Payless many high end fashionistas are secretly dipping into the store with their $300 shades to scoop up a pair of designer shoes for cheap. Brands like Abaete were one of the first to kick off the trend. Although this has been going on for a few years now, I never really went to check any of them out.

Today, I decided to take a peek into the store to check out Christian Siriano and Lela Rose's Payless designs for this season and I must say, they are very impressive. I know they are online, but, sometimes you just need a personal inside look.

All shoes are under $40.

My personal picture

Hey curvy girls!
Last week I was afforded the opportunity to go The Heart Truth Red Dress collection Fashion Show. You know the show where celebrities wear red dresses to help warn women about the effects of heart disease. Well, I must tell you that the show rocked. Celebrities from Regina King to Kim Kardashian strutted their stuff down the runway. Of course two of our favorite young curvy girls- Raven Symone and Jordin Sparks was there representing for us. (Read more of the story after the pictures)

Check it out:

Here's a little recap of  my 5th row seat inside the show:

Excitement and anticipation filled the air once Lady Gaga's bad romance blared from the speakers. You could see heads bopping and necks stretching to see the first celebrity-Pushing Daisies star Kristin Chenowith walk down the runway in her Swarovski gown. As the celebrities walked down the runway, a large screened displayed their names and the designer dress they were wearing. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks and Cosby show alum Raven Symone were giving major diva attitude as they sashayed down the runway with their curvaceous hips swinging left to right. At the end of her walk, Raven Symone tossed her head back and kicked off her shoes into the crowd before she left the runway. One of the most surprising celebrities to see was Bethany Frankel from Bravos Real Housewives of New York, gracing the runway with her pregnant belly in tow. As she was walking, her dress kept riding up her leg and the audience got a peek at her undergarments. The second most surprising moment of the night was seeing true diva, Joan Collins gracefully walk down the runway as the crowd cheered in admiration.

No strangers to the runway, and new moms, Heidi Klum and Kimora Lee both looked great after just having babies. Kimora wore a strapless knee length dress from her new Kouture collection and Heidi's gown was designed by John Galliano. Kim Kardashian showed off her curves in a Marchesa one shoulder gown and singer Estelle gave a bashful smile in Zac Posen. My favorite celebrity of the night was Regina King who showed the runway who was boss with her bold and sassy walk in a fitted ruched mini dress. As the show came to an end, a shower of red confetti fell from the ceiling while all the beautiful celebrities came back out for their final walk. It was nice to see these powerful celebrity women wearing their red dresses with pride- knowing that the message they are sending will save lives.

Note: For attending the show, I received a heart health gift bag filled with the heart health journey pin, a pencil case filled with band-aids, visine, neosporin lip protectant, a diet coke heart health straw, heart truth sport bottle, and a $10 coupon to use at RueLaLa.com/VIP

Hey curvy girls,

Sometimes you find the cutest items when you are not looking for them. The other day I was browsing through H&M just to see what new items they had. I had no intentions on purchasing anything, but, I just wanted to look. Well, to my surprise, I found a great deal of pieces that I just needed to grab up, because our sizes are always the first to go. (Read more below)

Today I wanted to share one of those pieces. A ruched puff sleeved green cardigan. What I liked about it was that the puff sleeved was not wimpy, it had a stiffness to it. The ruching added an extra effect to the other wise plain cardigan. I love bright colors and thought that the green was perfect for my chocolate complexion.
I also love big oversize earrings, so I added these peach colored tear drop earrings to jazz (old skool word) up my look.

What I'm wearing:

Ikat print dress, Faith 21
Cardigan, H&M
Earrings, H&M
Patent Leather Shoes, Rampage

I will share the rest of my purchases throughout the week.

Happy Monday curvy girls! It's skinny girl fashion Mondays. In this feature we take a celebrity look and recreate it for the plus size curvy girls. This week, Stylish Curves wants to give you a little inspiration from Taylor Swift.

What I love about this look is that its sweet and girly. An empire waist with a ruffle hem is flattering on just about every shape. The bright red color of the dress reminds me that spring is only a couple months away. I love that Taylor (or her stylist) chose to pair the dress with a black cardigan and mary janes. It makes the look casual enough to run errands in and cute enough to have some daytime fun with your girls.

Hey Curvy Girls:

Today's celebrity fashionation is Jordin Sparks.

Ms. Sparks wears a red flirty dress with black Chuck Taylors.

Is she "Working It!" or is it "Back To The Drawing Board!" for Jordin?

Vote:

All this week The Fashion Bomb has been posting throw backs of black history fashion trends (my favorite was the big gold rope chains that Run DMC used to wear) and it inspired me to represent some of the history that black plus size curvy women have made.

Cover Girl has been influential in representing women of color. Thanks to Queen Latifah's Cover Girl line, Jordan Tesfay was the first black plus size model to be in a nation wide campaign, for Cover Girl cosmetics.

Who is Jordan Tesfay: (According to Wikipedia and her myspace page)- Jordan is a model with Wilhelmina model agency in New York. She won a model search with MODE (Remember this magazine) magazine. She has made appearances in the straight to DVD movie, Carlitos Way, Rise to Power. She has graced the cover of Amaze magazine multiple times.
