Who says curvy girls shouldn't wear white? Well, anyone who believes that is wrong. Fellow curvy girl Kim Kardashian shows off her curvacious figure in a white colorblock black leather trim form fitting dress. Since the dress shines on its own, we like that Kim kept the accessories to a minimum. Classic black peep toe pumps, a double finger ring, and colored bangles were just the right touch for this look.
SC has a major girl crush on Christina Hendricks. Her body is amazing and we just love how she doesn't tone down her curves for anyone. Recently Christina was spotted in NYC rocking a boatneck curve hugging little red dress.
SC wants to know is she working it or is it back to the drawing board?
Hey curvy girls all over the world,
I just wanted to say hi to the new followers. Thanks so much for following SC. Also for the new followers, in case you didn't know, I am a contributor for The Budget Fashionista. I work on a variety of fashion pieces but mainly on the Look For Less posts. So I just wanted to share with you a few pieces that I've written this week. If you aren't be sure to follow TBF on Facebook.
Hope you all had a great weekend.
Yesterday shoe mogul Steve Madden presented fellow curvy girl Jazmine Sullivan with Billboards rising star award. We all love Jazmin for her powerhouse voice but sometimes her outfits are a bit questionable. At the event Jazmin rocked a 3 piece suit with a white button up. SC wants to know is she working it or is it back to the drawing board?
Fellow curvy girl Raven Symone graces the cover of the November/December Body issue of Kontrol Magazine and we think she looks lovely. Kontrol magazine says, "The Body Issue is all about taking care of your body, loving your body and being comfortable in your own skin."
Raven has always embraced her curves and recently lost a few pounds. She sits down with the magazine to discuss her new body and her thoughts on being compared to Oprah.
We think this is a good look for Raven. She has always been that down to earth type of girl who hasn't let success go to her head. We also say kudos to Kontrol magazine for featuring a celebrity on their cover with a little meat on their bones.
Checkout pictures from Raven's spread in the magazine and tell SC what you think.
When it comes to looking for stylish trendy plus size clothes that are affordable the main places any curvy girl thinks of is Target, Kohls, Forever21, and even H&M. We never think of Kmart. Well, now we can. Upping their style factor, Kmart has released their new Spring 2011 campaign featuring plus size models in very stylish trendy clothing called Love Your Style Love Your Size
. You know SC loves when company's embrace curves in a stylish way and we say kudos to Kmart for creating a very good looking campaign and secondly for showing the clothes on women who are actually curvy.
I can see these clothes working for curvy girls of all ages. These are great everyday looks to keep your curves looking stylish.
What do you guys think of Kmart's new plus size campaign? Will you be rushing to the stores when the Spring collection hits?
I am so excited to introduce to you the winner of Fashion to Figure's Rock Your Fashion Inspiration contest winner, Tyiesha Dorsett. Months ago one of my mentors Maddy the editor of Plus Model Magazine asked me to be part of a project she was working on for Fashion to Figure. I was floored that she even thought of me because there are so many great stylish bloggers out there. However, I'm no fool so I said yes with the quickness. I never imagined that I would actually be styling anyone for a major retail company or a major online fashion magazine.
After weeks of planning the project we came up with a makeover contest. To my surprise we received an overwhelming response to the Fashion to Figure contest. After a week of deliberations we picked a winner last month. We had to keep everything on the hush hush, so, now I'm ecstatic to share with my lovely readers the winner and how my first ever styling gig went. I was super nervous. I decided to wear my faux fur vest to bring on the styling spirit of Rachel Zoe (I know I'm crazy)
I hope you guys like it and you can be honest.
Here's the breakdown of how the day went.
It was at 9am that I first met Tyiesha, a tall pear shaped beauty.
After meeting Tyiesha, I went straight to work. A few days before the shoot, I emailed Tyiesha to get an idea of what kind of look she wanted. She said she wanted a Kim Kardashian or Beyonce type of look. So, I started pulling clothes from the store. I pulled a lot of one shoulder fitted dresses because we all know how Kim K. likes her body con one shoulder dresses. I also pulled some gold and sparkly body con dresses because we know how Beyonce loves gold and loves to shine.
After pulling clothes we had Tyiesha try on a few pieces to see what worked and didn't work for her curves. These were just a few pieces she tried on..
After Tyiesha tried on tons of clothes we then sent her to Plus Model Mag's hair and makeup team. Hair was styled by Aliza and make-up was done by Tara. While Tyiesha was getting her hair and makeup done she had the task of figuring out which outfit she wanted to choose.
After talking things over with her mom she decided to go with the black and sliver spaghetti strap dress. Now that she made her choice it was time for the photo shoot with photographer Tony Armstrong
Tyiesha did so well taking photographs that we actually had time for one more outfit and the second outfit that she liked the best was a lace trim leopard print dress.
After a long but fun filled day Plus Model Mag got the shots they needed and Tyiesha and the FTF staff were very happy with the looks.
Not too shabby for my first time styling for someone other than friends, family, and myself. I definitely learned a lot of do's and dont's and hope that this experience brings more opportunities for me. The Sky is the limit!
I am about to act like I won an Oscar or something, but, I wanted to give special thanks to all the people that made this happen and a success.
First thank you to:
Maddy from Plus Model Magazine who always keeps it real with me and is so encouraging and helpful. Thank you so much for this opportunity. I will never forget it.
I also want to thank stylist Steffany Bready (Dope stylist) for all your help. I had no clue how to prepare for this and she willingly gave me advice and her own personal tips on how to make this shoot successful. Even when I doubted myself she was just a phone call away to keep my thoughts positive and strong.
Special thank you to Charlotte and Jennifer from Fashion to Figure. You guys were so patient with me and thanks for the Cinnabon birthday cake.
Thank you to Tyiesha for entering the contest and for trusting me to do a good job.
Thanks to the FTF store staff for allowing us to take over the store and to Plus model mags team Tara, Aliza, and Tony.
Ok, so, I may be a little late, but if you haven' already, be sure to pick up the December issue of Black Enterprise. Why? Well, plus size fashion blogger turned MTV TJ Gabi Gregg is on the cover. This fabulous young woman is surely making a name for herself and she's using social media to do it. This is mega for a blogger to be on the cover of a magazine period. SC loves that Gabi is following her dreams and doing it ever so fashionably. Congrats Gabi!
In the magazine Gabi gives Black Enterprise her tips on how to avoid Twitter mistakes and how to utilize social media.
Here are a couple of Gabi's tips for utilizing Twitter:
How to have a conversation on Twitter
Yes, Twitter is a great place to let people know what you’re doing. But if that’s all you’re doing, it’s not going to work. “You can’t just go on Twitter and type in the title of your blog post and link to it. Or you can’t just say, ‘Oh, look what’s new here.’ It has to be a conversation. And that’s what’s so amazing about Facebook and Twitter—that you can engage with your audience. You shouldn’t just post something and go on with your day,” Gregg says.
Not targeting your audience
One of the keys to having a successful message is to make sure you’re talking to the right people. Gregg says, “Initially you should search for people in your field, people you want to connect with. Follow them, see what’s up with them, introduce yourself, and that’s how you can really start conversation.” And you can also target individual tweets. “Make sure you’re targeting people who you really think would care about what you’re saying. Then literally direct your tweet so it’ll show up in their mentions. If you @ reply them, they’re more likely to see it.”
I have come across quite a few amazing people in the blogosphere. One of those amazing people is Marie Denee, creator of the wildly popular blog The Curvy Fashionista. I first met Marie at the Lane Bryant Bloggers conference and I must say, just like Jerry Maguire, she had me at hello. Her alluring personality and no holds bar conversations is just what the plus size community needs.
Miss Denee has a masters in marketing and has major experience in the fashion industry. After losing her job a couple of years ago Marie decided to start The Curvy Fashionista and in her words she has never looked back. I had the opportunity to have a brief conversation with Marie in October at the Just My Size blogger conference and I got to find out how she came up with The Curvy Fashionista and what are her favorite blogs to read.
I wasn't going to post the video because it's not the best quality because we look a little orange in the video. Nevertheless, I thought you guys should know why Marie started blogging and what's next for The Curvy Fashionista.
Congrats to Marie Denee The Curvy Fashionista on another wonderful year of blogging and keeping the curvy girls up to date on the latest fashions. It is truly an honor for me to know you and thanks so much for all your advice and guidance with Stylish Curves.
Okay checkout the casual conversation
***Please note that this was recorded in October so some of her projects like FFFWeek have occurred already.
"I like your boots! I am tryna find the close-up picture of that middle outfit you have. The one with the leopard leggings. OMG. I wanna see that."
The outfit she is referring to is the middle picture on SC's header. You can checkout that post here. I totally forgot all about those leopard print pants due to the mountain of clothes that are in my closet. After I gave her the link to that post, I decided to search for those pants and what do you know I found them.
I got these leopard print jeggings from Faith21 last year. A friend from Jersey of all places talked me into buying them. You know Jersey girls love their animal prints. I love these pants because they're comfortable and saucy. They were one of my favorite pairs of pants to wear because I would wear them with t-shirts and solid colored button ups. People think that plus size women should stay away from any printed pants, but, I say screw that. I love my body and I'm going to embrace my curves and not be afraid of printed pants. I know I may have gotten some weird looks wearing these, but, one thing about me is that if someone doesn't like what I'm wearing then that's their problem. Just like Fantasia said, "I'm doing me!"
This time, I decided to wear it with my black draped vest, lace sleeve shirt, and Vince Camuto suede pumps. Thanks Shelley for reuniting me with an old favorite.
Last month I was invited to checkout Loft's Spring 2011 preview. I wrote about it on The Budget Fashionista but just in case some of you missed out, I wanted to share it here with you. One of the things I love about Loft is their easy breezy chic styles. I love that all of their pieces are interchangeable or interesting enough to stand alone. Normally for Spring and Fall they have amazing comfortable dresses that can transition from day to night. I was disappointed that for their Spring collection they offered very few spring dresses.
Nevertheless, I thought they did offer a chic variety of separates that gave a cool downtown girl feel. For more of my review checkout the The Budget Fashionista.
