STYLE JOURNEY: STRIPE OUT

Hey curvy girls all over the world,

When it comes to prints, stripes, polka dots, and leopard, are my personal staples. They are classic prints that are always in style. However, for me, stripes are my absolute favorite thing to wear. I think one of the main reasons is that so many people believe that plus size women shouldn't be caught dead in horizontal stripes. Obviously, I beg to differ. In my opinion, plus size women can wear stripes. We can wear pretty much anything any non plus size woman can.

Not to get all deep on you, but wearing a striped dress empowers me. It lets me know that I am not allowing anyone to dictate to me what I can and can't wear because of my size. This season, I went on stripe overload. I've purchased striped blazers, skirts, and a countless number of striped tops.

This particular striped dress was waiting for me. Last week I hit up Bloomingdale's for their brown bag sale and spotted this Ralph Lauren nautical striped three quarter sleeve dress. Now, this wasn't my first time seeing it. A few months earlier they had it but didn't have my size. I was disappointed but after a few weeks, I completely forgot about it. So, imagine my surprise that I see a striped dress hanging on the sales rack squashed in between cropped Ralph Lauren pants. I walked over to the sales rack, grabbed it, and say what now, it was my size. I immediately took it to the fitting room and what do you know, a perfect fit.

I held the dress up and said to it, you were waiting for me. Yes, I talk to my clothes. For my first time wearing it, I wanted to put a casual spin on it. I'm always in heels so, I thought wedges would be the right answer to creating a casual look. I teamed up the Ralph Lauren dress with a pair of metallic gold wedges that I got from Forever 21.

I had sworn off Forever21 shoes due to a pair of floral heels I got from them about a year ago. They were painful to walk in. These wedges were so cute, that I felt I couldn't pass them up, and wedges are way more comfortable than heels. I can't go wrong. Luckily, I was right. These bad boys are super comfortable and were just what I needed to create my casual nautical look.

For accessories, I pumped the look up with a multi plated gold necklace from F21, a woven skinny belt from Fashion to Figure. I utilized the usual accessory suspects such as my Michael Kors watch and straw clutch I stole from mom. I also added a stretch blue bracelet from Loft.

Before I go, let me leave you with this. Stripes are your friend. Don't be afraid.

Some of the biggest celebrities in the world have made Tadashi Shoji, the king of draping and ruching they're go to designer when it comes to red carpet events. No matter their size, plus and straight size women all flock to the designer when they want a sexy, sophisticated, flattering look. I've written about Tadashi Shoji designs numerous times and one thing that always sticks out to me with his designs is that he never ever sacrifices style just to make something look flattering and just about everything he makes in straight sizes also comes in plus.

Yesterday, I received an email from the brand sharing with me their new e-commerce site that is specifically for plus size women. Normally you can find Tadashi's designs at Nordstrom's, Saks, and Bloomingdales, so, I think it's wonderful that we now have our own little site to shop. They even used a curvy model to show off the looks.

The site hosts classic draped and ruched Tadashi gowns as well as chic little cocktail dresses in rich hues and metallic fabrics. It also displays picks of celebrities who have worn the exact style on the red carpet. Octavia Spencer has been a great celeb model for the brand. Remember her Academy Awards dress? It was beyond beautiful.

The site is an extension of the main Tadashi Shoji shop. It offers sizes 14Q-24Q and 1X-3X. In case you were wondering the Q is for Queen Sizes. Kind of sounds like you're ordering a mattress right? Uh, let me get a 22 Queen. No, seriously, Tadashi is all for plus sizes and when they use the word Queen, they say, "Elegant style fit for a queen."

STYLE JOURNEY: THE FUN AND FLIRTY FLORAL DRESS

Hey curvy girls all over the world,

I hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend so far. I know I am. This is just one of the summer dresses that I found during Macy's mega sale last weekend. I'm not a big fan of American Rag but I have been digging their flirty dresses lately. I keep saying that I am not a floral print kind of girl but I keep buying floral print pieces.

So, I think its time for me to stop saying that, right?! If you have the same feelings, I used to have for florals then today's post is not for you. I figured out that I do like floral prints. I just like them done in a cool young way. Like on a skater dress or with interesting details like an exposed zipper or small floral prints on sheer shirts.

I was intrigued by this dress because of the flirty silhouette and the exposed zipper on the front. It also has a petticoat style layer under it which gives the dress a little volume. The straps were thick enough to wear a bra and the straps had an adjustable strap. What more can an ample bosom chick ask for?!

I'm also rocking another pair of Vince Camuto heels. I know, these are like the 6th pair. It's kind of hard not go into their store because it is literally across the street from my office and they always have a size 10. ALWAYS! That's why I never leave the store empty handed.

I also took a picture of the dress without the belt so you can see how it looks on its own. I like either way.

Well, I'm going to enjoy the rest of my day and I hope you enjoy yours too.

So it looks like plus size models are heating up magazine spreads across the country. Most recently curvy model Candace Huffine was shot by Damon Baker for a sexy spread in Spanish magazine S Moda. Of course most of the shots were baring lots of skin. I personally would love to see a real spread with plus size models in clothes made for us. Don't you?

Everyone's fat girl hero Beth Ditto chatted it up with Virtue and dished about her feelings on Karl Lagerfeld's negative comments about Adele, if she had the time she would do a line of clothes for plus size men and women that would be affordable, have classic pieces as well edgy styles. She also mentioned that one of her fave stores was ReDress (now closed) in Brooklyn.

Hey curvy girls all over the world,

I totally forgot about this dress I wore on Saturday. It's the cutest little white dress. It has a mesh neckline and little sailboats on it. Saturday's for me is all about easy breezy clothing. When the weather heats up I just like to throw on a dress and keep it moving. This is one of those dresses that looks equally as good with flats as it does heels. But I'm a heels kind of girl. Right now I'm obsessed with my pink shades and have been wearing them with everything that has a splash of pink in it. Currently, I'm just having fun with my wardrobe and I tell you the freedom I feel when I just throw something on and not have to put too much thought into it, is great.

The Gossip's lead singer Beth Ditto was spotted last week in a bevy of outfits that went from edgy casual to red carpet chic. Beth is known for her unapologetic funky style as well as her proud fat girl attitude. Let's take a look at the Gossip's singer week of stylish ensembles.

Beth was spotted outside of the Letterman show in NYC rocking a cute and casual look that was made up of a denim jacket, sheer black dress, silver flats, and a multi colored purple tote.

I will be bringing you exclusive interviews with designers, models, writers, and bloggers who are all in the fight for the advancement of plus size women. Today, I share with you my interview with Plus Model Magazine's editor and chief. This is quite a lengthy post so I suggest that you get you a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy the new feature. A Day In The Life Of Plus Model Magazine's Editor & Chief, Madeline Figueroa Jones:
This weekend I had the wonderful opportunity of sitting down with one of the leaders in the plus-size community, the EIC of Plus Model Magazine, Madeline Figueroa Jones. My first encounter with Madeline aka Maddy was almost 3 years ago. As a contributor for The Budget Fashionista, I had the opportunity to go to Lane Bryant's first blogger conference. We were the only two attendees who were coming from NYC. From our first introduction we hit it off immediately. Throughout the conference we got to know each other a little more and after the conference our flight was delayed for two hours and we spent the entire time talking and realized how much we had in common. She was a mom, I was a mom and our children's birthday's were one day apart. I lived in Bayridge, her family lived in Staten Island a few minutes from Bayridge. She was a model, I used to want to be a model. And the conversation just went on and on. Since then, our friendship continued with quickie lunches and long dinners in lower Manhattan.

One of the things I admire most about Maddy is her relentless passion for the betterment of the plus size fashion and modeling industries. She's like the big sister you go and get when someone is messing with you. She plays no games when it comes to discrimination in the plus size community. You better watch out. I've never met anyone that made me want to tie a scarf around my head, roll up my sleeves, pump my fist, and say, "I'm proud to be plus." Maddy is one of those women who is fearless and follows her heart. It's those characteristics that has made Plus Model Magazine the #1 plus magazine in the industry. Some of you may think that Plus Model Magazine just appeared and garnered all this success. What you don't know is that Plus Model Magazine has been working towards their success for over 5 years and the world is finally catching on and understanding their message. They have an amazing team of stylists, writers, photographers, PR, and marketing execs that help keep the magazine going.

I sat down with Maddy to get the scoop on how she does it all, from managing a booming career to her home life. Maddy also dishes on her favorite designers and how Plus Model Magazine started.

STYLE JOURNEY: PINK OVERLOAD

Hey curvy girls all over the world,
There's no secret that I love pink and any variation of it. To me, the color represents all things feminine and girlie. I remember going through a phase where everything I owned had to pink. When I got my first apartment I wanted to paint the entire place pink. I wanted a pink comforter, pink sheets, all pink everything. After awhile, I realized I had to approach pink in an adult way. Which meant incorporating hints of it in my daily life. This spring/summer season, I've relapsed. I've been going pink crazy, as you've seen here in some of my outfit posts. Remember my pink suit?

It's to the point now that whatever I see in the color pink I have to have it. Last month, I fed my pink habit my purchasing this pink and purple floral body con skirt. The print was so strong and bold that I couldn't put it down. There were a number of ways that I could have worn this skirt but I like for certain prints to shine on their own. I teamed the skirt up with a basic crew neck tee and a pair of BCBG patent peeptoe pumps.

I went in overload mode by adding on one of my favorite pairs of shades from Kensie and a pink and purple jeweled plated necklace. To me, fashion is supposed to be fun and it's okay to pile it on every now again. This is a look I had fun wearing and although it's simple it keeps me grounded and lets me know not to take fashion so seriously.

ITS OUR 3 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Hey curvy girls all over the world,
I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful day. I'm so excited to say that its Stylish Curves 3 year anniversary. Yes! Can you believe it?! I've been blogging for 3 whole years. Cue Raphael Sadiqq's "It's our anniversary."

To show my gratitude and thanks to my beloved readers, I have lined up a few giveaways, all starting next week Monday.

As always, I like to keep it real with you. This year has been quite a challenging year for me as a blogger. I've had some Hi's and I've had some lows. There was a point where I wanted to stop blogging altogether but every time I tried to give it up, something kept pulling me back in. I enjoy coming up with creative posts to help make shopping for your plus size body a little easier. I enjoy being able to share with you what's going on in the fashion industry.

At some point this year I lost my way and didn't like the blogger I was becoming. I even at one point lost my love for blogging. As I am working on getting back to the reason I started blogging in the first place I am truly happy that I stayed in the game another round.

This year I hope and plan to take this blog to the next level. When it comes to blogging, my priority is what you the reader wants, so feel free to drop me an email or comment in the posts on what you would like to see more of.

Now, on to what I'm rocking. As seen in my haul video I am rocking the zebra print pants from Kmarts LYS collection. They're so comfy and nice change from skinny jeans, although I still want a pair of printed skinnies. I was going to wear a black top or blazer with them but decided to amp things up with a red blazer and white v-neck t-shirt. This was a relaxed and casual outfit and I will be wearing these pants to death for the summer. I am already building up my tank collection to rock them with.

FASHION TALK: ACID WASH JEANS, TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT

Torrid Acid Wash Jeans, $58.50

Hey curvy girls allover the world,
Every season there is a trend or two that re-surfaces from fashion's past.
Some trends we are excited to see return, like peplum, and others we hope will never return. For those of you who remember what fashion was like in the mid 80's to 90's may be surprised to see the return of acid wash jeans. Yes, you heard me right. Acid wash jeans are back. There have been quite a few of late 80's to mid 90's trends to make a successful comeback. Remember Balmain's triumphant revision and reprise of shoulder pad-esque blazers and jackets? Then there's also leggings, which are still gong strong. Leg warmers made a mini comeback but I think we sent that trend packing back into the past from whence it came.

Like any trend that's reprised from the past, there are certain updates to obviously make them more modern and wearable in today's world. There are some acid wash styles that are not as loud and harsh looking to the point that you look like a former band member of Guns and Roses. There are some that are more refined and will actually have you giving a second look.

With that being said, I pose this question to you, acid wash jeans, should we take it or leave it?

Hey curvy girls all over the world,
Next to peplum and colorblocking the hi-low trend is also one of my favorites for 2012.

It's a combination of sexiness and sophistication. Modest in the back and sultry in the front. I chose to rock the trend in a classic color combo by teaming up a black hi-low skirt with a silk white and black polka dot shell from Loft.

This skirt is one of those pieces that you can dress up or down. I always choose to dress things up but on the weekends an off the shoulder tee or cropped top and flat or wedge sandals would look just as good.

When I get dressed I always think about how I want to feel in my clothes. Since yesterday was Mother's day, I wanted to project that I'm a young, vibrant, chic mommy. And that's exactly how I felt in this outfit.

What I am digging about the hi-low trend is that it will work well for even the most modest plus size woman. The length on this particular skirt shows just enough leg. My yellow heels will be a staple for spring and summer. I like for my shoes to be playful and fun no matter what I wear.

Hey curvy girls all over the world,
Weekend casual for me always involves a pair of skinny jeans, heels, and a cute top. It's my signature weekend look. For spring, I'm making the sheer oversized top my go to weekend staple. They're comfy and perfect when I want to give spanx a rest. I've probably bought too many of these tops already. I have them in every color.

This particular top is from Kmart's LYS line. I loved the tiny little flowers on it and green is a color that works well with my complexion so I thought the top was a win win plus at $20 it was beyond a steal. As I said in my video, you can practically wear this top with anything. I personally like oversized tops over a fitted bottom. So I would even tuck this into a pencil skirt.

I picked up the yellow in the top with my suede peeptoe heels from Aldo and completed the look with my straw clutch.

And there you have it, weekend casual.

Hey curvy girls all over the world,
Just wanted to share a quick little post with you before the sun went down. It's Friday and its date night. Finally the rain broke and I'm going to enjoy the evening with my boo. I thought peplum would be a dressy casual look for the evening and it case it gets chilly, I'm taking my blazer with me. Peplum is one of my favorite trends this season and I just can't get enough of it.

Peplum tops can be worn with anything it gives the most basic pieces a lift and transform an outfit into something quite dashing. I love this peplum top from Fashion to Figure. It's chic, on trend, and it brings out my inner Sannnnnndra from 227. I have a few more peplum pieces to share but this top is something I will be wearing to death.
